For me, Beyond The Tipping Point is a personalization of my experiences progressing through a career that has spanned more than 3 decades. My specific career of course doesn’t matter, because I believe that in many important ways or points of connection, what you do is not nearly as important as why you do it.
Think about this last statement for just a moment, and ask yourself why do you do what you do?
This, as you will ultimately discover, is a question in which your initial answer may change – perhaps even dramatically – by the time you reach the end of this text. Yet the underlying reason or reasons for why you do what you do, and ultimately what you wish to achieve in your career, will remain unchanged. What will change will come about as a result of the reintroduction to your original higher purpose or calling. Especially as the encroachment of everyday living and all of its distractions are pulled away.
In essence, and by the time you read the last page, you will rediscover your purpose and as a result, your role or place in Gladwell’s Tipping Point’s agents of change ensemble.
But that is just one part of the overall equation.
Once you rediscover your purpose, and then your role or roles – I believe that each one of us at any point in time can transition between being a connector, maven or sales person – the question then becomes one of where do you go from here.
Inner Orbis – a unique, highly specialized consulting firm, was my answer to that question. Based on the Inner Orbis mandate, this book will focus specifically on the role of being a connector.
In the meantime, I truly believe that we all have a story to tell, along with useful wisdom to impart. In this context, you should ask yourself this one important question . . . what is the value that I bring to the table? The “I” of course being you!
It is in your answer to this question, that you will find my first reason for writing Beyond The Tipping Point.
For me, it was the realization and recognition of the value I provide to others beyond myself. This includes overcoming my own perceptions, or misperceptions, of where I fit into the world from a contributing value standpoint.
Discovering where I fit in was for me, as it will be for you, an important moment of revelation. The reason is quite simple; until you are able to define your role and its value outside of yourself, you will never be equipped to truly realize your true potential. Nor will you be able to fully help others to find and realize the potential within themselves, and their own dreams and visions. It is definitely not a those who can – do, and those who can’t – teach, scenario.
In the end, this is what it is all about. Your realization of your own goals based on you being a Gladwell connector, and your ability to bring together and harness the unique abilities of those in your circle who themselves are connectors, mavens or salespeople.
